A rather sobering article, absence makes the heart grow weaker, in the New Scientist points to the health effects of lonliness in later life.

Loneliness is bad for the heart, suggests a new study. It shows that loneliness increases the blood pressure of those nearing retirement age to the same degree as smoking or a sedentary lifestyle.

I suppose if you went to your GP with this you might be given ‘beta-blockers’, it’s a pity they can’t prescribe ‘friends’ (twice a day, with meals) .

There seem to be an ever increasing number of articles in the scientific press demonstrating the close link between health and emotional wellbeing. All the more reason to look after your emotional health.
