Intention Tapping Is Not Just For Soothing Angry Drivers

17 May 2019 by [Andy Hunt]

A few weeks ago I visited my sister who still lives in my home town in rural North Wales.

This area is criss crossed with narrow roads that don’t normally see much traffic. One morning I was driving down one of these roads through a 300 metre single track section stuck between a dry stone wall on one side and an earth bank on the other.

Fortunately, this road isn’t used very much and it is unusual to run into someone on this particular stretch … but of course I did.

I came face to face with another car, full of young men, heading in the opposite direction.

When we stopped, facing each other, he was just 5 metres past a small widening of the road I could have squeezed into to let him pass. I was about 100 metres passed a similar passing place.

I smiled and shrugged at the other driver expecting him to back up so I could get past.

    He had different ideas.

He flicked his hand at me in a dismissive ‘you back up’ gesture.

I cursed and started to back up.

A 100 metres later I squeezed into a passing place and he drove past without so much as a nod of acknowledgement.

    Attachment Leads To Suffering

I sat there for a few seconds cursing and grumbling about the youth of today.

Even though nobody was hurt and nothing was damaged I was suffering.

    I fumed about:

    • how arrogant he was (obviously they must have been louts!)
    • that he should have backed up to let me past
    • I should have made him back up
    • he should have been more considerate
    • he should have been more friendly
    • he should at least of said thank you
    • etc.
    • etc.
    • etc.

I was thoroughly emotionally attached to my story about how I had been wronged and it hurt.

Of course I could have used standard EFT/Tapping to soothe all this righteous indignation: neutralising the memory and resolving each of these (very annoying) aspects of the ‘problem’.

But I didn’t do that, instead, I did a few rounds of tapping using the Intention Tapping created by Australian Psychologist and tapping expert Steve Wells.

This is a very simple way of freeing ourselves from our attachment to our distress.

The process is simplicity itself I tapped a few rounds on:

“I release all my emotional attachments to that incident” and “I release all my emotional attachments to the $%#!% idiot driving that car”

The incident that had so upset me very quickly became just something that happened.

Of course most problems are much worse than having to reversing down narrow country roads, but whatever the issue there is likely to be an emotional attachment to the issue that is painful.

    The issues could be:

    • Memories or traumatic experiences
    • Limiting beliefs
    • Our fantasies about what bad things will happen in the future AKA anxiety and apprehension.
    • Excessive rumination and thinking
    • etc.

These can be difficult experiences in themselves, but adding emotional attachment to them can make them much worse.

That’s where Steve’s intention based tapping can help. It helps us let go of our attachment to our issues.

Steve Wells Intention Tapping Workshop - London

Steve Wells is running an Intention Tapping workshop this autumn in London and I’m delighted to be helping organise one of his infrequent visits to the UK.

This new workshop on the use of Intention Tapping for working with the core beliefs that drive your life; beliefs relating to your Vision, Values, Identity, Goals and Purpose: these core beliefs profoundly influence your life and your work.

Since learning the Intention Tapping techniques I have found them to be a powerful addtion to my ‘tapping toolkit’ so I am also looking forward to learning how to better use these techniques with my clients.

This is what I said about Steve’s last workshop in Manchester in 2018

“The speed and ease of this process makes it very powerful and wide ranging in a way that standard EFT/tapping (which is excellent) can’t manage. It’s the difference between ‘hunt and peck’ typing and touch typing – both create words but one is much easier than the other.

Apart from the speed the other wow factor for me is the harnessing of the unconscious mind to do what it does best by following its own links and associations which are hidden from our own conscious mind.

In my opinion the combination of power and grace in the ‘Intention Tapping’ processes are worth their weight in gold.”

As you can see, I have a very high opinion of Steve and his workshops.

Bonus workshop: After the weekend workshop there is also a bonus Practitioner only day for people who want to use Intention Tapping (IEP) to work with trauma in their clients.
