Prescribing for ADHD in US

This is the startling introduction to an article on the prescription of amphetamines to ‘treat’ ADHD in the US.

The figures are mind-boggling. Nearly 4 million Americans, most of them children and young adults, are being prescribed amphetamine-like stimulants to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Up to a million more may be taking the drugs illegally.

Coffee shop training for the Great North Run

Now that I’ve told everyone that I’m running the Great North Run (GNR), I suppose I actually need to get started with the training. While there’s a lot of physical training, I’m treating it as an opportunity to use all the tricks of my trade to improve my performance and deal with the mental aspects of running a half-marathon. I’m working on the assumption that the first place to run the GNR successfully is in my mind. From that perspective EFT, NLP and TAT will be really useful in training for the mental aspects of the run.

Energy Psychology for PTSD

In a recent EFT training in Aberdeen someone asked me if EFT was effective for PTSD. The question reminded me of this story which answers the question rather eloquently.

Carl Johnson, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist retired from a career as a PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) specialist with the Veteran’s Administration has, over the past six years, frequently traveled to the sites of some of the world’s most terrible atrocities and disasters to provide psychological support based in EP methods. About a year after NATO put an end to the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, Dr. Johnson found himself in a trailer in a small village where the atrocities had been particularly severe. A local physician who had offered to refer people in his village had posted a sign that treatments for trauma were being offered. On the afternoon of a very hot summer day, a line of people had formed outside of the trailer. The referring physician told Johnson, with some concern, that everyone in the village was afraid of one of the men who was waiting outside for treatment.

Lonliness isn't good for you

A rather sobering article, absence makes the heart grow weaker, in the New Scientist points to the health effects of lonliness in later life.

Loneliness is bad for the heart, suggests a new study. It shows that loneliness increases the blood pressure of those nearing retirement age to the same degree as smoking or a sedentary lifestyle.

I suppose if you went to your GP with this you might be given ‘beta-blockers’, it’s a pity they can’t prescribe ‘friends’ (twice a day, with meals) .

There seem to be an ever increasing number of articles in the scientific press demonstrating the close link between health and emotional wellbeing. All the more reason to look after your emotional health.

At last it dawned on me …

“For a long time it has seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”
